To A Land Unknown Premieres
at Cannes and London Film Festival
Following its premiere at Cannes, Mahdi Fleifel’s To A Land Unknown premieres in the UK at London Film Festival. Brain Audio sound designer and re-recording mixer Steve Bond talks about his compelling and mmersive sound work on this feature.
RAW SOUND
“This story, told in a raw and unapologetic documentary style, immerses the audience in the soundtrack of a lesser known side of Athens, an environment seldom seen or heard on the big screen. In this story, set against the backdrop of a community of migrants, there is no personal space, very little peace. The sound environment is busy, dangerous, dirty, uncomfortable and unforgiving. It was necessary on to build an expanded palette of oppressive sound for this picture. Early on we visited the Athens filming locations, ambisonic recording equipment in hand, to capture the chaotic and gritty sonic backdrop for the picture. Sound design from a sound library simply wouldn’t have stuck to this picture. We really went the extra mile in capturing extended location sound and guerrilla foley. This hands-on realism is something that we are passionate about at Brain Audio.”

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
“Production was coordinated with a powerhouse international sound team including sound designer Martín Hernández (Pan's Labyrinth / The Revenant). Hernandez brought an immediacy to the sound team, with an incredible ear for simplicity in storytelling. At one point, because of the incredibly tight production schedule (6 weeks overall), as final mix came together at Brain Audio Studios, we had a sound team working concurrently in London (Foley, sound editorial and mix) and Martín’s team working in Mexico City (Foley recording, editorial).

The resulting soundtrack shares the aesthetic of raw documentary production with theatrical immersion. Grit and determination not only portrayed on screen, but also behind the scenes in the capture of a truly visceral soundtrack.”
To a Land Unknown has its UK premiere at LFF on the 11th and 13th October 2024
